I've got both of these drives and had been wondering about the 238 for a while. Until now, all I could find on it said it had the same geometry as a 238R. So, I formatted it as one and it's been working fine ever since. No trouble with the LLF, partition, DOS format or booting. So, while I'm still not positive as to what it really is, it's running fine as a 238R @ 26 sectors/track. I used a WD1002-27X with it.
BTW, I've got a NOS, NIB WD1006V-SR1 if someone needs one. I've also got a used one that's available, too.
