I'm after an SMT 68030. Must be at least 25 mhz, can still be attached to a junk board. I already have through-hole 030s of varying speeds, this is needed to resurrect a system.

The situation with fakes on eBay and UTSource for these chips is catastrophic. It is now impossible to source one online that is known real/working, and on SMT chips this makes things especially difficult as SMD pads can only survive a few installation/removal cycles, especially using amateur equipment.

On top of that, as of recently the legs on these CPUs appear to have become highly vulnerable to corrosion, which is why I'm looking for one in the first place. I've been stymied twice in trying to salvage one from a dead board only to find that the legs had been corroded clean through.

Can anyone help?

If you're worried about damaging the board, just cut the legs off the package. Get a sharp box cutter and extend the blade far enough to cut through the pins and slowly slide it down the package. Once you separate the body, you can use flux and a blob of solder on an iron to pick the leg remnants off.

I'd also recommend using low melt solder. Cerrobend, wood's metal, the Chinese 138C stuff, chip quik, etc. It'll make it a lot easier.

As for fake 68030s, I bought some FE33C chips from UTSource and they turned out fine.
