Hello everyone,

I have a vintage wy-50 terminal that has a green phosphor screen and it sort of works. The issue is that it can receive data just not transmit back to the Linux box..

I ran the self test and it fails with loud beeping and the letter X...

Does anyone know what the self test is checking or a place to start? I received this from the former IT director at DEC and it's in pretty good shape cosmetically...

Video of self test here...

Thanks for the help,

According to the maintenance manual on bitsavers, "X" means "Modem port error". Doesn't seem to give any more information than that, and doesn't specify a chip at fault. Unclear exactly how it would determine something is wrong there. Back then, the fix for such things seems to have been to replace the PCB. At least the "X" is consistent with other issues you've seen. There might be more information on bitsavers, or else where. https://bitsavers.org/pdf/wyse/WY-50/

Yes I just attached tx and rx on each port
.. can anyone reverse engineer the bin files of the firmware on bit savers?

The odd thing is the self test at power on passes but the user engaged self test does not. Wish I knew what that firmware was checking.... And I can send data from a device but it never sends data back.

Just a guess. I expect the power on test does not do the loop back test. The loop back plug would not normally be installed at power on.
