Euro trip

Yeah, yeah, leave it to you Yanks to use C-4 when a rachet would do :)

Well, it's all academic now. The guy lived on a houseboat, moved the PDP to one side to get the bubblewrap in the shipping box, boat flipped over and sank. Bummer. I think the guy survived, but, I was MUCH too upset to check.

:(

Holy--! You mean this guy actually flipped his HOUSE BOAT over, complete with everything he owns, in the river?? Is there an article somewhere I can read? Tragic. But I simply cannot NOT see the humor in it-- Computer collector lets his hobby get the best of him. I must know more! I'm not being cruel, but damn!

Umm, Nathan, it was a joke.

There was no PDP-8 in the Netherlands to be picked up, I was just pulling Tony's leg.

Therefore, as far as I know, no houseboat flipped over etc. etc.

However, as I mentioned in another thread, there IS a nice Cray XMP-5 there, but, Tony probably wouldn't want to carry that on his return trip either LOL

That's what I get for walking into the middle of a conversation :p Duh me. It sounded like ti could have actually happend. One of those, "Hey y'all, watch this" moments.

Anyone who lives on a houseboat and is stupid enough to cram a mini computer onto it, almost deserves the boat flips over and he drowns. I mean, it is not like he brought an Osborne-1 onto the boat.

16 hours and counting. I leave at 5:18PM (well, scheduled) from Fort Lauderdale to Detroit, and then Detroit to Amsterdam. I'll probably do what I did last year, which is take a train from Amsterdam Schiphol airport, to Groningen, and then a taxi from Groningen to Eemshaven.

I'm hoping to see Allard's collection in Groningen, and maybe get some pix, too. I also emailed him offering to bring a TI CC-40 that he wants in his collection, assuming I can fit it in. Unfortunately, I'm unexpectedly bringing a TON of hardware in my baggage: 3 Linksys WiFi USB print servers, (4) Lantronic Serial servers (Wi-Spans i think) plus (2) Digi One SP serial servers just in case. Never used the Lantronix, so the Digis are a backup plan. Also bringing a metric ton of DB9 male and female connectors, as well as the hoods. Also bring the mentioned-in-other-thread CP/M and GIDE documentation and source code, to see if I can handle integrating the GIDE into the BIOS and ROM.

I think, as a new thing, I'll upload pix daily to PhotoBucket, so you guys can see what goes on in the last 7-10 days of a cruise ship being built. Emphasis will be on the casino, which is where I do my IT Support.

I'll post links to the albums as I upload them.

Tony

If you take the train that leaves Schiphol at 21 minutes after each whole hour (from platform 1/2), that is the direct one to Groningen.

Well, the casino is not open, because the ship is still in the yard

I am going to install the IT stuff in the casino, which is basically the player/slot tracking system.

Jorg: thanks for the hint. Sent it to my Blackberry ;)

Don't forget to hack the '0,04 ct for every transaction to my swiss bank account' option ;)

Weather is fair around 60F bit of sun, bit of rain. Have fun!

The smallest regular cruising ship built in 2007 is Queen Victoria (Cunard) which "only" holds 2014 passengers. The largest this year is Liberty of the Seas (RCCL) with 3634 passengers. By 2008-09, RCCL will get yet another ship, Genesis that holds a total of 5400 passengers, which will be the largest cruising ship so far.

At the same time, a lot of second-hand cruising ships are sitting in the West Indies, going on mega-sale to get buyers. Expensive fuel and competition from these new luxurious giants that have so many activities to offer will probably not get the old ships back on the sea.

Of course, those looking for 5+ and a bit intimacy will not board such large cruising ships. There still seems to be a market to build much smaller, even more luxorius ships.

We're working on our 3rd generation "Freestyle" ships, due out on '09.
about 4000 pax. Freestyle means you eat when you want, where you want, wiith whom you want, instead of assigned seating like other lines.

Our latest ships, even have a 4 lane bowling alley onboard! And it has a bar inside, so it's kind of funny. It's bad enough, you're on a moving ship trying to bowl, but throw a little alcohol in the mix, and WooHoo! Bust out the cameras!!!

OK boys - I'm off to the airport in about another hour - gotta pack the lappie.

I'll check in when I get there. I arrive at Amsterdam-Schiphol airport at 1115AM Local time, which is 0515 AM Eastern Time. I should be at the ship by 4-5PM local time, noonish Eastern Time.

Ta-Ta for now, and I'll talk to ya'll later.

Tony

Doesn't every cruising ship worth its salt have at least one bar, or did I misunderstand something? Ah, perhaps a bar interconnected to the bowling alley, so you can take a swig immediately between the throws.

Elsewhere, I saw a list of theme cruises another company holds. They're about chess, bridge, classical music, food, dating, dancing, golf... GOLF! Yep, I have seen these golf simulators, which I presume is what they use onboard. Even the largest ships would be hard pressed to build a useful golf course, or even one hole onboard. Putting practise perhaps.

I didn't see any computing related theme in the list though. Perhaps computer nerds are not among the clientel that take long, luxurious cruises, or generally can't afford one unless they sell off their collection.

I've never been on a real cruise, but I had an interesting experience on the ferry from Kiel to Oslo once.

Everyone boarded between 4 and 5 pm, and when I went in search for dinner at 6 pm, there was already a group of Norwegian ladies that tried to enter the restaurant- without luck, because they were already so drunk they could literally not stand on their feet anymore.

Carlsson will know, but alcohol is heavily taxed in the Scandinavian countries, but the ships are tax free.

Got to the ship - just woke up from a 6 hour nap.

Arrived Amsterdam-Schiphol at about 11:15AM Local Time.
Got on the 12:21AM Train to Groningen, arrive at Eemshaven to the ship at about 3:40PM Local Time.

Not bad...not bad at all...

Tony

Can you work whichever hours you like, or will you need to adopt to daytime hours? For reference, Tony's last message was posted at 01:48 in the night, local time so I'd suppose he went back to bed again.

Yep - went back to bed (Thanks, NyQuil!) and woke up at 8:45am.

Normal hours during a newbuild are about 9a-9p or so, as we are in a last-minute rush to finish everything.

Ships sails out on 10/1 I think, heading to Rotterdam.
