I've read conflicting stuff on this, but supposedly one can take the 6530 from a working SFD drive and put it into an 8050?

I note that on the SFD, the 6530 resides in a socket beside another chip, and that these are on a small board which plugs into a socket below. Would I take just the 6530 chip, or that whole 'daughterboard'?

Check the model number of the 6530 chip and compare to the model number of a 8050 drive. As far as I've understood, the daughterboard consists of a 6530 + small 2K EPROM which overtakes the ROM content of the 6530 so it can be used in any type of device.

As Anders mentioned, if the dash number of the 6530 happens to be the correct one for the 8050 you have, you just use it as is. However if not, you simply program a 2K EPROM with the correct data for the dash number 6530 you have and use the daughterboard in the 8050.

Dang -- the dash number is -04 on the SFD and -03 on the 8050. The little chip beside the 6530 on the SFD is 251257-02A. Outta luck I guess!

Is the number on the 6530 RIOT chip in the 8050 any of these?

901483-03.bin 10246530-038 RIOT DOS 2.5 Micropolis

901869-01.bin 10246530-48 RIOT DOS 2.7 MPI

901885-04.bin 10246530-47 RIOT DOS 2.7 Micropolis

It would be a simple matter to burn a 2716 EPROM with the contents of these 1K files.

Yes it's the 901483-03. I'm not clear on how to burn or connect the 2716 EPROM -- I'll have to read up on that.. much appreciated.

One more quick question... if I find, somehow, a replacement 901483-03 chip out there... as long as it has that exact number and was made by MOS, that's going to be a direct drop-in replacement for the original? I have a line on a company that supposedly has 4 remaining pcs of NOS 901483-03... but before I buy I just want to make sure it's the same thing.

The RAM/ROM I/O Timer (RIOT) 6530 chip has 1K of mask ROM memory. So the dash number of the part is critical. If it is exactly the same part number, you should be OK.

However if it is costly, say over $20, I would be glad to ship you a 2716 EPROM with the proper code in it, jut to see a 8050 come back to life as the only cost be me is a stamp.

You would have to use the daughter board from the SFD-1001 drive however to get it all to work as the daughter board bypasses whatever is in the 6530 and uses the EPROM code. So it would only be worth it if you do not care about the SFD drive.

I just noticed you said the part was a -04.

Is the complete number of the SFD chip 901885-04? If so, it may be compatible with your 8050 Micropolis drives.

Yes.. it's a 901885-04 in the SFD. If I were to use it, do I need to take the whole daughterboard or just the chip itself?

I'd be more than willing to pay for that EPROM... I don't suppose there's anywhere else to get the daughterboard from? I'm not sure if this SFD-1001 is working right anyway as my PET seems unable to get it to do anything.

Answered my own quesiton. Tried both with the daughterboard and without... no change.. the 8050 still flashes 5.
