Getting closer to Model II improvements...

One of my cheapo chinese psu's bit the dust about a month ago, I only used it for powering hard drives and 5.25" floppy drives, I switched on and there was an almighty bang i nearly jumped out of my skin, I cracked open the case and what a bodge, i'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, It did tend to get quite hot though if used for not so long periods.

The Model II factory Motorola CRT specifies 1.2 - 1.5 amps and the factory RCA CRT 1.0 amps nominal. I see you have an Amperex CRT in your machine, but assuming it is similar to the Motorola, 2.0A might be pushing it with the fan for that grade of PSU. For comparison, the factory PSU is rated at 4.5 amps 12V.

Just to prove the bad quality of the cheap chinese switching power supplies.
I found a 24 volt / 12 volt power supply. I would use it for a stand alone 8" drive.
I had only one day fun with it. The next day it didn't work at all. :(
They would be protected against overload but they are not.
I think the peak current of the motor is too high for them.

And you have to wait so long for the, too!

Is there any reason why we couldn't just use much higher current models? Give us some leeway?

A late update to this thread.

In the end I sourced a MeanWell 12v 5A supply from eBay and fitted it. It has been running well for 6 months with no problems.
