Compaq LTE 5400 Issues

I have a Compaq LTE 5400 laptop I bought in 2014. This laptop is running Windows 98 SE.

I am having a few issues however, attempting to try and transfer files over to my modern PC. I'd like to send over a word document over!

Issue 1 - I've tried to burn to disc a Word File using ImgBurn. It says no writers found. Were the 5000 series only fitted with just readers?

Issue 2 - I purchased a PCMIA USB 2.0 Card and installed the NUSB36 driver. Even when the card is inserted the computer is saying both slots are empty.

Any solutions or recommendations?

A laptop of that age would likely not have a burner - those didn't become common until the late 90s/early 2000s.
I'd also assume that it probably doesn't have CardBus support either - which would explain the USB card issue. That one I'm less sure on though.

Side note - make sure you pull the old CMOS battery from the unit. It should be behind a door on the bottom. They can leak.
