Personally I've never worked with card decks - but I was surprised how long they were in use. Around 1988 I watched 2 elderly gentleman walk into a pool caffee with a box of cards. They sat down, ordered coffee and cake, then went through the deck , meticulously numbered it and checked each and every card for any piece of cardboard still attached to the holes. After about 2h they were done, and enjoyed a game of pool before going back to "work".
