Do you think Tim Patterson infringed on DRI's rights with QDOS/MSDOS?

It's a wonder MS haven't bought them out by now......
They did - in 1999. Microsoft Services for UNIX was previously known as Interix which was previously known as OpenNT which was first released by SoftWay Systems in 1996. Microsoft discontinued SFU after Windows 7/2008 R2 as UNIX was basically irrelevant by then - the Linux subsystem on Windows 10/11 is its replacement.

I believe the Windows Resource Kit (at last in NT 4.0 and earlier) also included most if not all of the missing bits required to meet the very bare minimum requirements for POSIX compliance on Windows NT. But something that meets the POSIX requirements and goes no further isn't exactly useful for anything but box checking which is why OpenNT/Interix/SFU was developed.
