Dallas didn't even bother with a circuit board--just bend up the pins on the DIP and soldered the appropriate component in place. This has been discussed here at least twice.
But we were discussing the incompatibility between the DS1297 and the DS12887--Dallas claims that the 887 is a direct replacement, but that's not entirely true. (for DS12887, read DS12885--for DS1287, read DS1285)
