Hi

Has anyone managed to get FlashFloppy working on a Model I (single density, 35 or 40 track system)? Looking for information relating to the FF.CFG / IMG/CFG settings or indeed a copy of the configured files.

Many thanks

John,
Would you mind posting the answers to the following questions for the Model 1.
1. What OS(s) are you using on the GOTEK for the Model 1?
2. What was your Hardware strapping for the GOTEK(s)?
3. What is your Configuration file for the GOTEK?

Anything else that would help me get my Model 1 using a GOTEK?
I previously have been running three floppy drives.

0: For Booting NEWDOS 80
1: Flippy Drive for files (AeroComp Flippy Drive)
2: Flippy Drive for files (AeroComp Flippy Drive)

THANKS.

Larry

Regarding the original question with using FlashFloppy, I *think* for use with a Model I you need to convert the usual TRS-80 emulator formats to .HFE, because they haven’t added specific support for them. (There’s Color Computer support, but apparently monochrome TRS-80s have less of a following?) I haven’t verified that myself yet because my Expansion Interface is… under the weather.

I guess if they’re giving out HxC licenses now that’s certainly an alternative.

Hi Larry. I'm using LDOS and TRSDOS at the moment. Pretty sure it will work with all Model I OS. If by hardware strapping you mean the sled, I 3D printed a custom variation of (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2217061) modified using Tinkercad and placed it in an external TRS-80 drive housing. I used free HxC software to convert the disk images. (https://hxc2001.com/store/getlic.html). I updated the GOTEK drive firmware to use the HxC boot instead of the original FlashFloppy. This can be done via a USB drive if a FlashFloppy boot is already installed. The main HxC site is here: (https://hxc2001.com/download/floppy_drive_emulator/). The drive cable I made was just a 34-way edge to 2x 34-way idc connectors. Hope this helps. John.

John,
Thanks for the Info. I have a *.hfe file for Newdos 80 for the Model 1 that I want to try. I need to repair my
Model 1 first. I seen to get other jobs ahead of the Model 1.

I have a Gotek on my model 1. Nothing to do with the config file other than specify Shugart drive type. Flash Floppy firmware and HFE image files.

Hi. Yes, was hoping that it would be possible to configure FlashFloppy to deal with dsk/dmk without conversion to hfe... it appeared not. I use HxC firmware instead of FlashFloppy due to personal preference but confess I have not tried FlashFloppy in a long time.

Keir Fraser has just re-written the DMK handler for greaseweazle tools upcoming v1.22 release. It was previously incompatible with TRS-80 M1 standard DMK images. I wonder if this will transfer also to his FlashFloppy project in a further update.

Further, Keir has let me know that FlashFloppy is incompatible with DMK images.

It looks great but what is the benefit to having TWO goteks rather than one?
Same as having more than one drive in any Tandy machine. Boot disk drive 0 / data disk drive 1 etc. For example, Infocom games are very large and if you are running in single density, without oversized hfe files, you quickly run out of disk space. Further, remaining in a native TRS-80 environment without pulling the USB to a PC/MAC is something that I prefer for file operations where possible. I guess at the end of the day everyone here has their own favourite machine, OS and hardware configurations. That’s the beauty of retro computing.

Is there a difference between the Gotek drives that have the round knob verses the ones that have the up/down switches? Will the ones with the up/down switches work on the Model I?

They both function in a similar manner, being able to cycle through the files on the usb stick. The knobbed version has a third direction by pushing the knob in, IIRC. This is also accomplished on the button version by pressing both buttons at once. This third function is used to update the Gotek flash bios from the usb stick. The knobbed version is later and may have an updated system internally.
