Greetings, my fellow nerds, long time no chat. Tonight is the first time in a decade? of logging in to the great VCF, got married, had kids, got house, cars, dog... life stuff.
Recently someone brought a IBM PS/2 50z in to the shop and I got to playing with it, then the vintage computer bug bit me again....

So here I am playing with my IBM 5150... trying to get a clean post.
I have the 16-256k planar, and a AST Six Pak Plus card for a total of 640k of memory.
If I remove the sixpak, setting the memory to 256k total, I can get a clean post.
If I add the sixpak, and set the jumpers to 640k, I get an error A0DF 201 on post - but all my chip pulling and troubleshooting is not helping me find wherever A0DF is...

Anyone got any ideas? Suggestions or wisecracks for me?

Any assistance or advice is appreciated... I'm dying to get this thing to a telnet bbs via null modem cable and a hayse modem emulator..

Kind Regards,

-JDT

Per [here], the "A0" bit of the 201 error indicates an error at the 640K address.
So, the question becomes, why is the power-on self test trying to test RAM past 640 KB ?

I suspect the motherboard switch settings.
In adding the SixPakPlus, you will not be adjusting SW1 (i.e leaving all 4 motherboard RAM banks enabled); you will only be adjusting SW2.
Verify that the SW2 settings are per the '640 KB' row at [here].

Also, do not get off and on confused. See [here].

Lots of IBM 5150 information at http://minuszerodegrees.net

Hey! Where in Cicero? I have family on Lake Shore. :) Small world.

Sort of near the Walmart, on Sunset Terrace. You live close?

,

On = 1, Off = 0
I set the planar SW2 to 1 0 0 0 1 (512k) and get a clean post. So I guess I need to check the switches for 640k, which should be 1 0 1 1 0 (as per: http://minuszerodegrees.net/5150/ram/5150_ram_64_256_SW2.jpg)

I actually live up in Plattsburgh, originally from Lyon Mountain, but my late uncle moved down there in the 40's and worked for Carrier for years. That part of the family eventually settled down in Cicero on Lake Shore. :) :)
