HP C1537 SCSI DDS3 tape drive on PDP11/73?

I have a 3rd party SCSI controller, which seems to work fine in my 11/73 controlling a SCSI2SD and a Pioneer DR U124 CDROM.

I have an HP DDS3 DAT SCSI drive (C1537) that I would also like to get going. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Peter

Does your 3rd party SCSI controller support tape drives by implementing TMSCP? A CMD CQD-200/TM is an example of one that does. It would also depend on if the OS you are running has a tape driver available.

Pls tell us what controller you have.

F.e. i do have an /93 with DEC RQZX1 scsi controller with attached RZ scsi drive and an HP DDS3 running RSX-11M.

In the distant past, I installed HP DDS1 drives on all sorts of systems including PDP's.
There was often a specific firmware version to suit the host, that changed scsi settings and sometimes what it reported itself as.

Yes, but there are different firmware revisions of the Emulex cards. Some support only disks and some support both disks and tapes.

Even then, the disk and tape variant can be deconfigured to support only one type of interface.

Which EXACT variant do you actually have?

Dave,

Is there a way to get build / version information from the Emulex under RT11 or do I need to pull the card and look at the rev / prom markings?

Thanks

Dave,

I have pulled the card - it is Emulex UC07 10405-00 Rev D
firmware is labelled G143R.

It certainly works with SCSI disk drives and with CDROM.

Dave,

The board is a little confusing.

it is dual width not a quad module.

it has multiple designations PCB silk screen says UC0710405-00 rev D
Sticky label says: UC0710205-02 Rev K

Main ICs say U2 Emulex 2400010 ESP100A
U12 is Intel 80C31
U16 Emulex 2400042
U26 Emulex 2400002 HAC

There is a small dip20 top left U7 with a label H295B

2 x switches - SW1 4 pole all open
SW2 10 pole 5 is on the rest off.

I have both emulex UC17 and UC18 UNIBUS disk controllers.
Firmware I have on them is G143R (upgraded from G143P when I got them).
AFAIK it is the last version of firmware for those series of controllers.

Many thanks all.

I'll do some experimenting.

Looks like I can either use the UC07 to emulat either an mscp disk controller or as a tmscp tape controller.

The UC07 card can either emulate the MSCP disk interface ***OR*** the TMSCP tape interface - but not both simultaneously.

Therefore, you either need a second UC07 (or similar) card configured as a TMSCP controller for the tape - or find a different card that can support both the MSCP and TMSCP protocols concurrently. I have a CMD card that will do that - but (beware) some CMD cards only supported the MSCP or TMSCP protocols (although I know of people who have updated the firmware on a single-use card to support both).

The UC08 is the QBUS version that basically combines two UC07s into one card, so the UC08 can do both MSCP and TMSCP simultaneously on two different SCSI busses.
Similar to the UC17 (single SCSI bus) and UC18 (dual SCSI bus) for the UNIBUS.
I haven't tried it on my UC18, but I believe you can set it up to do two different MSCP SCSI busses as well, as the primary and secondary MSCP controller addresses.
Same for UC08.
