Is this an Apollo mission guidance computer rope memory module ?

The simple answer is yes and no!

The Apollo Guidance computer came in different "flavours" at different points during its development.

The second link you refer to indicates that this is a Block I core memory module.

The version that flew to the moon was an AGC4 Block II (which was a much later design) - so I am 100% convinced that this type of core rope memory never actually went to the moon. You can see the core rope memory for the Block II in the video at "http://www.footagevault.com/clip/FTV-0008795/apollo+guidance+computer/all". The video shows two of the six core rope modules that were fitted - and the technician removes one of the modules.

If anyone is interested, I converted the MIT schematics (found on-line at "http://klabs.org/history/ech/agc_schematics/index.htm") to VHDL for use on a FPGA development board. You will find this at "http://opencores.org/project,agcnorm". Sorry, the webpage is poor at the moment - but the documentation included within the download (for a Xilinx Spartan3E FPGA) contains full documentation.

There is also a software emulation of the AGC which you can download from "http://www.ibiblio.org/apollo/". Great fun...
