Looking for volunteers to help test a new benchmark

here's a few more results for you....

Much obliged!

BIOSinfo=(C) Copyright 1986 Amstrad Consumer Electronics plc((CC)) CCooppyyrriigghhtt 11998866 AAmmssttrraadd CCoonnssuummeerr EElleeccttrroonniiccss ppllccg (q , rev. 0)

Hilarious!

i also tested a few modernish machines and the results confirmed what i'd suspected, i.e. for real mode 16bit progs P4 are slower than P3 machines (guessed this before as i'd found lots of my 128/256b intros that ran full frame on p3 take well over a frame on p4 and above!).

I also found that out. It was very strange seeing my Core i7 only 20% better than a P3 500MHz. Well, now we know.

Thanks also to vwestlife for the 386sx16 result!

hello , today's testresults:
xt motherboard with SOTA 286 cpu add on card. In the add on card, did replace cpu with "make it 486" . NO driver for the cpu used in this test.

And did try today. My "rev to 486" in the Inboard. But 0.95 version of the test program did not recognize the blue lighning cpu. The chip and speed are just .. awesome !

I'm not sure I understand the results. The CPU model and speed seem to be detected somewhat properly, but the actual code execution (which has nothing to do with whether or not the CPU was detected properly) is so slow that it's just about the speed of a PC/XT (your Score is 5 whereas a PC/XT is a 4). You wrote "NO driver for the CPU used in this test", can you be more specific what that means? Is there a driver to run to activate the CPU? If so, you should re-run the test with everything running at full speed.

Much obliged! I've fixed a regression and 10MHz should show up as 10MHz from now on. I have to ask, though:

IBM PS/1 Model 2011 80286 underclocked to 3.579 MHz (also verified with Open Logic Sniffer)

I'm confused by this. Why intentionally underclock to a speed no 286 has ever run in a personal computer?

Why intentionally underclock to a speed no 286 has ever run in a personal computer?
I know the Tandy 1000 models with an 8 MHz 80286 would let you switch it down to 4 MHz, to allow games written for a 4.77 MHz 8088 to run at approximately the correct speed.

Thanks also to vwestlife for the 386sx16 result!

One slight glitch, though... I pulled out the CPU daughtercard, and it turns out it is actually an Intel "C Step" NG80386SX-16 chip, not an "AMD Am386SX" as the program reported:

Well, this one is really messed up. This was taking from a Quad-Xeon Intel SRSH4, these results are SEVERLY messed up.

No worries, at least I got the 386sx16 part right. The detection routines are a convenience to the end user, but correct detection is not required to get the full use of the benchmark.

Here are some odd ball results.

Unfortunately I can't use any of these results because something blew a gasket and the results are gibberish. On very fast machines, most if not all of the tests should have an execution time of 0 microseconds and the Score is the only thing that can be used to gauge the speed of the system, but the fact that they're all in the hundreds or more means that something is seriously wrong. Maybe the initial execution of the code is slow but subsequent execution goes much faster? I'm not up on how state-of-the-art emulators do pcode or JIT compiling, so I'm just guessing.

Keep in mind the benchmark's useful range, by design, stops at the Pentium III. Or, "any machine where running 16-bit real-mode code in DOS is still practical and expected".

Here is from a real computer, an AST Adventure! 400.
I found the way the BIOS was reported strange.

The code to detect the BIOS copyright string finds a keyword ("COPR.", "COPYRIGHT", etc.) and then scans backward to find the first non-printable character, then scans forward to find the last non-printable character. So if there is junk, albeit printable, that ends up in the string. The full benchmark tool in development allows the user to edit all of these fields before committing them to the database.

Oh, and how is it possible that the ram is SO SLOW?

The video card? S3 cards usually needed a tweak to operate in faster modes depending on the bus, didn't they? See http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=15190 and scan down to "S3 Speed Up", for example.
