M102 won't enter BASIC

Just put in new batteries and turned on my 102 for the first time in a year.

Went right to the main menu. Selecting Telcom, Addrs, Schedul, etc. all open fine.

But selecting BASIC - not good. Screen blanks for a second, then returns to the main menu.

Menu shows 29638 bytes free.

Would anyone know what to do to get BASIC back?

(This happens whether or not the Ultimate Rom II chip is inserted.)

did you try the "cold boot process"?

hold down CNTL-BREAK, power off, keep holding those keys down, and power up, release.

(alternative is CNTL-BREAK - hold - hit reset - release)

or the arctic version of cold boot - pull batts, remove external power, turn off the memory power for 20 minutes and then power up
