I got the following via eMail:

We just moved and I found my mac classic sitting in it's case in the
basement and I was dying to start it up to show my kids what greatness was
and I have a dog gone password on it which I will never be able to remember.
Is there any way for me to get around this?

I'm not familiar enough to know about a password protect. I'm assuming it's software based. If so, is a reinstall the only option?

software

yep, it will be software based.

I _may_ be as simple as holding down the shift key whilst booting.

Yeah, that'd be pretty cruddy security but there were some programs out there at the time that did just that.
