Way back when, I used to run a BBS from my house. One dedicated phone line, a USRobotics HST 9600 modem (later upgraded to Sportster 28.8), a Jameco turbo XT mobo, Miniscribe 3650 HDD and 2 Mitsumi single-speed CDROMs. All in a modified Dimension 68000 case.
The board was called "The Derelict" because I was enthralled by the story of the Mary Celeste.
I started with Spitfire software, but eventually broke down and bought PCBoard.
It was very popular until the introduction of Internet access for the masses.
The point is, I just acquired a Lantronix UDS10, and one of its talents is that it can connect any serial device to a LAN. If I'm reading the specs right, it can also imitate a modem for the serial device. Therefore, BBS software would be quite content and operate normally.
Here comes the sticky part, how does anyone else interact with it? Is there any terminal software that can operate over a network?
For the moment this is just a mental exercise. The aforementioned Miniscribe drive is now 17 years old and hasn't been fired up for quite a long time. It has also probably been formatted in the meantime.
I might do it though, just for giggles :D
