Need to figure out something with compaq portable 2

I have a compaq portable 2, it will NOT boot or see the main hard disk. says type 2 on a sticker.

machine powers on, and goes to a system options not set error, (dead CMOS battery most likely).

it will boot from a dos 6.22 disk i have here.

my main question, is there a way to hook a 720k 3.5 drive up to the existing controller? this is something i need to do because im having loads of trouble with 5.25 disks and bad sectors, drive issues, winXP i/o error issues, etc etc etc.... so i cant boot a compaq software bios setup disk to even configure the hard drive.

any ideas?

Hi,

I did the same thing because of the same symptoms on a Compaq Portable III, so I guess you should have no issue with a direct replacement.

I have one of those epson dual floppy drives, where it's both a 5.25 and a 3.5 drive. I use it all the time to boot up 3.5" floppy disks. I am sure you have seen those drives. They were obviously designed to save space and get 2 drives into the space of one. And yes, I mean to boot up the Compaq Portable with it.

i purchased some disks.

Doesnt matter, anyway, i believe the hard drive is shot.
