Hello all.

I bought this gem for 8 EUR.

About the only thing that comes up on google is the auction where I bough this. It's missing the buttons on the front, also there was no power supply but the PCB text says 20V (AC) and using a US Robotics 20vAC PSU (from a much later modem) does work.

What does the text "2x300" mean? The V21 spec says the transfer speed is 300 baud, so does the RS232 side run at 600 baud then?

So far I haven't been able to get anything out of the RS232 port (which I presumed to use a standard pintout, which I of course can't know for sure). I am guessing that this predates any Hayes compatibility, so this doesn't have any AT like commands at all? Also is this a manual dial modem, ie. I need to plug in a phone and use that to dial the number and then press Data on the modem perhaps?

How does one operate a non-Hayes modem? Did these have any commands on the RS232 side or did you dial manually, and would the modem itself then detect appropriate carrier and signal and then just open the port and dump the de-chiphered signal there?

I attempted to plug this in to my VoIP box with either a modem or a dial-touch phone on the other line, using a config where I can dial from one port into the other. When dialing the ITT (from a phone or from a newer 56k modem) I can hear that the line delay clicking in and out as if it's switching itself into the line so it detects the incoming call.

A phone connected to the ITTs phone output is completely silent (perhaps this is meant for a older pulse-dial phone? But shouldn't I still have the line noise on the newer phone?).

I am not sure if I can do anything with it (also the whole above is just my thinking out loud wondering), but it's cute little device anyway :)

Very cool modem. I didn't know ITT sold their phone products outside the US.
I owned a Radio Shack DC Modem II and a Novation Smart Cat that used their own command sets. Most com programs defaulted to Hayes, but allowed you to change and save the dialing commands. I was still happy to eventually get a Hayes compatible.

That modem may only have pulse dial output.
This is the ITT cordless phone that I got for my 13th birthday. It's only outputs pulse dialing, which surprisingly my telco still supports.
It's been running for 41 years and counting.

Thanks!

That cordless phone of yours looks great, @Torch. The leather looks stunnigly good for the age. Are those even leds or just small bulbs?

I haven't been able to figure out much more, but I've keep working on getting a known-good test setup first with newer modems and my VoIP box (still something amiss there).

I did replace the missing buttons with a 3D printed ones though :)

Just came by one of the ITT 1181, from serial number earlier one, with black case and bit different writings in front.

From the web I found similar model of 1182, which has also short manual in Finnish. That one shows port as V.24/V.28. Also, from PCB it seems that it does not use (minimal) RS232 pins.
