Is there a replacement circuit for the DEC 8266?

Do you mean the Signetics 8266? Quad MUX with weird inputs? No pin-compatible that I know of.

Probably would have to create a substitute using SMD logic ICs on a DIP(ish)-sized PCB.

You could probably do it with a GAL or a combination 74158+4 inverters (just a guess).

Is there any documentation on these 'special' DEC parts besides the block diagrams that show up in various appendices?

I've been looking for more documentation (prop. delay, pin drive, etc) on the DC101, DC003 and DEC8646 chips. I'm suspecting I'll have to pull them from a working board and measure them myself.
