Shugart 800 has read errors past track 8?

Physically, they're the same. AFAIK, the drive latching layout is almost identical to the SA-800/801 drives. Even the connectors should be a close match.

However, if you're running an Altos system with the upside-down drives, you can't use the Qumes and stay within manufacturer's parameters. Qume says not to run them upside-down.

Never did understand the Altos thing anyway.

I heard the plastic head mechanism on the Qume drives can twist with age and go out of alignment. Has anyone seen this?

It wouldn't surprise me, but it's never happened to me.

If you want the best drive, hands-down that I've ever used, it'd have to be the Siemens FDD-200. No plastic there--even has a cast metal faceplate.

You definitely believe this is not a mechanical problem, and not distorted in the lift mechanism or something in order to reduce the pressure on the head enough space for your step? A curious question: These drives look like they 110VAC drive motor, so they still need such a relatively new 24VDC? About Qumes what?
