I finally got around to building up a Glitch Works reproduction SSM-IO2 as a serial I/O. It's a straightforward build based on the board manual's schematics. I added an MC1488 and MC1489 to handle the EIA interface as somewhat more period correct parts (similar to the Processor Tech 3P+S). The board (simultaneously) replicates the ports and status word of the MITS 88-SIO Rev 0 and Rev 1. I'm using it at 110 baud with a teletype. Still testing and ironing out a bug or two, but I'm interested to know if anyone else here has built one?
The SSM-IO2 board is handy in the way it provides the I/O decoding circuitry and interfaces with the data lines on the bus.
