8" drives are loud and would drown out the rest of the instruments. 5.25" floppy drives could make for nice techno maracas.

Though it pains me, watching many thousands of dollars worth of equipment being abused that way. A few performances and all of it will have to be replaced.

I don't think so, he's done quite a few videos with this setup. I don't think the motion hurts the equipment at all. And I'm nearly certain he didn't pay much for any of it. Surplus / used 3.5 floppy drives could be had for a buck or two for quite a while. The hard drives were most likely long dead or obsolete before being used, and the scanner was probably not worth using.

I think it was a clever setup.
