I have an old Toshiba T1960CS laptop that I got around 1997. It's not working, and I wanted to take a look at the hard drive to see what it was, but it doesn't seem obvious how to open the case to get to the hdd.

Does anyone have experience with taking one of these apart, or any info about finding a service manual for the machine? I have the original floppies and user manual but there is nothing about opening/replacing the hard drive. I don't think that was something Toshiba wanted people to do in those days.

Thanks. I looked there but nothing for a T1960CS showed up. And I'm not sure the service manual showing disassembly and repair of the internals was ever publicly available.

At least there aren't too many screws visible, and the ones that are aren't the tiny, tiny ones of modern laptops. If I don't find any docs I'll just carefully start removing things.

I have opened my 1910cs when I replaced the hard drive back in 2003.At that time the instructions I followed were from here:http://www.apricorn.com/sup_hdinstall_toshiba.html,but the address is no longer valid.:(
From what I remember, first of all you must remove the plastic tab that is above the function keys, and remove the screw underneath. Then you must remove the side screws.I don't remember if you have to remove the bottom screws (better remove them to be on the safe side). Then with a plastic tool or a credit card separate the top plastic very carefully because it is very fragile. You also may have to disconnect the keyboard first but I'm not sure.A nice page for 486 toshiba
laptops is here:http://bitlink.ca/Library/toshiba.shtml and here:http://www.electronics.dit.ie/staff/bredmond/tosh486fix/index.shtml.Sorry for not be able to help you more but I don't remember many details:(

That's too bad, I was hoping you'd find something on that page.

Carefully removing things (and remembering how to put them back!) is a good place to start. angel_grig gave some good suggestions.

Thanks to you both. angel_grig may have put me on the right course by pointing out there is a screw under the square plastic piece above the keyboard. When I get around to disassembling the machine I plan to keep detailed notes.
