You have it right: assuming it gets past the console ROM code power-up self test, the console ROM code must next load the console RAM code from the TU-58. If it fails, you get the ROM prompt. If it succeeds, it loads the CPU WCS, again from the TU-58. And yes, the normal Console Mode prompt is >>>.

Since the last time I visited this thread, I've managed to boot my 11/730 from both the R80 and RL02 drives, using tu58em to serve up the console tape image. My next steps include 1) getting tu58em working on a Raspberry Pi so I can boot without tethering a laptop, and 2) getting networking up and running so I can transfer data on and off. It has been a few months since I've played with the VAX, but now that colder weather is finally reaching Southern California, it may be VAX season again soon!
