Hello members!

(I posted this in announcements, but it's worthy of discussion, so. . .)

This is it. The new Vintage Computer Forums are online and ready for use.

There are tons of new features available on these new forums so please explore!

Start by selecting "User CP" from the menu and setting up your personal preferences.

Almost everything from the old forums has transferred over. Please let me know if anything hasn't. The only issue I know about is avatars but I didn't want to delay reopening the forums for that.

As always, if you see anything wrong please let me know!

Keep in mind that this board is now very configurable so if you think there should (or shouldn't) be something then I can probably accomodate.

Thanks for all of your patience and support!

Theres a bunch of threads in the Tandy section that werent carried over. I would like to refer back to them, though,

Let me know the specific threads and I'll see what's up.

My first guess is that they did carry over, though. There are some controls on the bottom of each thread view that allow you to set how far back you want to see threads. I think the default is 30 days but you can set it to "from the beginning" and see every thread in a view.

The other possibility is that they moved to archive. To be honest, I'm not exactly sure how that works yet. . . :)

PM reply?

PM reply?

Is there a way to send a PM as a reply to a forum message?

I seem to recall that was a feature on the old software
and I thought I saw it on here somewhere.

Thanks.

I'm not sure there is a simple way, but you can easily drop down the menu from the users name and send a PM that way. If you cut/paste the text of the message it's almost the same thing! ;)

I thought that was the only way you could do it - PM somebody with
selected text copied from some thread & pasted into the Message Box.

How do I turn the face graphics off? - I like the text equivalent.

There is a small checkbox near the bottom of the options that says "Disable smilies in text." Clicking that should work!! ;)

While phpBB on every forum message includes a link to send a PM, it does not quote the message or in other way link to the thread. I doubt there exists any forum/board software that has this kind of interconnection, although I know about text based conference systems (with optional WWW interface) that has open and closed groups, personal inboxes etc all linked together. A such system also allows one to post a message to several groups at once, like Usenet, and choose to continue a thread in another group which the client will follow if the reader is subscribing on that other group too.

Nope, I don't see it. Underneath this box I have the Post Icons - No icon
selected of course & under the Submit/Preview buttons I have Additional
Options - which have Miscellaneous Options - Show your signature &
Automatically parse links in text, then Attach Files, then Thread Subscription,
then Rate Thread. Then there's Topic Review & then after all that there's
Posting Rules - you can't do this, you can't do that, etc! This follows under
that a list of stuff which is on or off:

vB code is On
Smilies are On
code is On
HTML code is Off

Selecting Smiles in that box only brings up a list of keystrokes which allow
you to select at the keyed symbol. I see nothing else which tells me where I
can disable the smiles. Obviously I could stop it by disabling Images in my
settings - but that throws everything else out. I've seen nothing in my
Settings which allows me to disable Smiles either.

Could it have something to do with the Skin I'm using?

Ah ha, now I've got ya. You need the Advanced text box to get the Disable the Smiley
thingy! ;-)

Cheers,

Just had a look at the Archive earlier. I thought it was very
good - it simply organises everything by Thread title - making
everything easily accessible since the beginning. Some of
those ol' threads bring back memories! ;-)

They also seem to be comming up in Google.

Cheers,

Yep, the archive is a nice, simple way of looking at older posts. You can always opt to view any given forum "from the beginning" and see all of the posts in the proper board format.

I could set the archive up to be in "board format" as well, but have opted not to.

I did, as you noticed, turn on the 'bot friendly version of the archives and the board. Google and other search engines are picking through our info daily which should be a great help to the community at large.
