I know there were ram mods adding up to 128mb I have made roughly half of a pcb based on that old tutorial and right now it’s on pause found chips too.

But I was looking at my 200lx and had to reset it last night and was kind of annoyed that I had to even take out the back up battery and began wondering if I can mod the rom at all and add a few essentials.

Anyone ever come across rom mods?

I've went through most of the old magazines and message boards from the 90's about these palmtops and never heard too much of anyone bothering to do it on any unit from the 95LX to the 200LX. Like you I heard a lot about RAM upgrades and also doublespeed upgrades, backlight upgrades. I think there was someone that was trying to put a light version of Linux on one. I don't know if it ever materialized though.

I would imagine it's possible though considering the HP 1000CX was sold with just MS-DOS 5. Coca Cola used a lot of them in their warehouses.

When it comes down to it though the software on the 100 and 200LX is pretty hard to beat. When I bought my first one I thought I was going want my usual DOS software I use on the desktop, but after using it for a month or so I liked what was on there. You can always run any programs on a PC card too and even set them up so you can select them in application manager. or you can bypass the PIM software and boot straight to DOS.

Ya dos is nice I don’t know where the settings are for bypassing sure would be nice if they had more ram though . I’ve never actually heard of a 1000cx seems very rare none on eBay. Looks exactly like a 200lx or 95 tho. Interesting machine.

The PC Card is what I would use to save from my 128mb ram windows if I ever get my project done. But changing the rom would be sweet as well to come with different default programs and things

The 1000CX shows up on Ebay every once in a while. They were never sold to the public, just large numbers of them sold to corporations, so they're quite a bit more scarce. The really rare one it the Omnigo 700LX which pretty much was a 200LX with a custom case that had a cradle for a Nokia cell phone that was also used as a modem. It was never sold in the US, only Europe and Japan as there was no GSM service in the US at the time.

You can get just about 640K ram through system settings but you lose storage on C:\ drive. It's still pretty limited for later DOS gaming, but for most tasks it seems to be plenty. I have had them working on some pretty large textfiles that were 150K or more of text and they were fine.

If you want to boot into DOS all the time, just edit your autoexec.bat in memo. Remove 100 at the bottome of the file and save. Now you'll only boot to the Command prompt. Type 100 at the prompt to go to the normal HP system manager.
