Greetings.

I need to remove a 286 from a PS/2 Mod. 30 to install HYPERTECH HYPERACE-SX (M30) PROCESSOR UPGRADE board. However, I do not have the proper tool to remove the 286 from the Mod. 30 board. There's a link below. Will this tool work to remove the 286? I do not want to break the housing for the 286 or the board is history.

Thanks

depends on what package the 286 is in, if its a PGA or a DIP then no that would not work

it's PLCC chip.

That tool will work. Some of the more chinese ones on ebay might have slightly longer grab hooks on the end so they need a bit more force to insert but those fit most chips in that package and yes I have occasionally used them to pull DIP's.

Thank you for your guidance, and thank you for providing a pic that I didn't think about adding.

I'll buy it now; it's only $4.33/free shipping. I don't know how they make money.

Thanks also to Osgeld.

I don't care too much for the cheap tweezers style PLCC extractors. I find it hard to get just the right grip on the corners of the PLCC package and a lot of the time the tool slips off the corners and strips them down slightly each time they slip.

I also have a very simple and small AMP / TE CONNECTIVITY 822154-1 pry bar type of tool that I find is easy to control to get just the right position and amount of force necessary to lever the PLCC package out of the socket.

They are under $4 each at several of the usual distributors (but then shipping will be relatively expensive unless you are also ordering other stuff at the same time).
