  • From now on we will require that a prefix is set for any items in the sales area. We have created regions and locations for this. We also require that you select a delivery option before posting your listing. This will hopefully help us streamline the things that get listed for sales here and help local people better advertise their items, especially for local only sales. New sales rules are also coming, so stay tuned.

For Sale: spotted on Craigslist (continuous sightings)

Yup, that's how I do it when I'm bored, but also with that disclaimer. You'll find lots of expired or taken down listings as well. Good though unless craigslist adds a robots.txt and I've certainly made quite a few nice purchases from craigslist folks not local to me.

Searchtempest works "so so". Craigslist does not have a US based database unfortunately.

I occassionally trawl Craigslist. From experience there is not that much listed on Craigslist considering it serves 350M+ people.

Have you tried the google search 'site:craigslist.org (thing to search for)'? It works, but it will show you expired listings as well.

Thanks for the tip, although I use adhuntr for that. The trick is that I want it to email me continually with matches. claz.com does this for other classifieds, but its matching algorithm is useless. Then, of course, there's PeterLI, who is a searching engine all his own.

Perhaps email "Craig". Probably not a bad nor difficult to implement feature for the site. I have a search on ebay for Atari Stacy which mostly reminds me about the latest "now that's what I call music" albums.

Alternatively it may not be too hard to code one yourself either. Agreed though, the nice url and summary are a good read and quicker to go through.

Maybe most of the work is already done out there? Here's a perl craigslist scraper thing.

edit2: It looks like CL does have an RSS feed whether that could be easier to scrape http://austin.craigslist.org/search/sya?catAbb=sya&query=vintage&format=rss

With Google you can also use allintitle:ibm ps/2 model 95 and site:.uk and so on. Beware: Google will throw back challenges and ultimately blacklist you when you use this like I do. Google will suspect you are a script / bot and sucking too much CPU / RAM.

Hi, Nathan here, founder of searchtempest.com. This came up in my google alerts, and I just wanted to mention a couple things in case they help. First, the default mode of searchtempest is powered by Google, much like adhuntr (or just going to google and using the site:craigslist.org technique). The main difference is that we split it up and do a separate search for each city before combining them all together in one results page. Google isn't perfect and doesn't always return everything, but splitting up the search like that helps us get as many results as possible (as well as letting us sort them by distance from you).

However, for those who want to be sure to find everything, we do have a couple alternate options. One is our "direct results" mode, which basically just links you straight to the results page for each craigslist city. It just saves you the time of opening up each one and typing in your search individually. The other one is our RSS feeds tool. Basically we generate a file with a list of the RSS feeds for your search from every craigslist city within your search radius. You can then import that file into an RSS reader to get notifications of new matches. So it's not email, but it does the same job. I wrote a full set of instructions, so even if you haven't used RSS before it should be straightforward. There are more details in our FAQ if anyone's interested:

http://www.searchtempest.com/faq.php#directresults
http://www.searchtempest.com/faq.php#rss

Hope that helps! I'll keep an eye on this thread for a bit, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask them here or via our forums or contact page.

Austin - Epson Action Note 500C Laptop - Collectible - $20 (Georgetown/Central Austin) This has been listed for a while but relisted quite a few times at same price. Not a bad little 486 system if someone is looking for one.

San Antonio - 20th Anniversary MAC TAM - $1500 (Stone Oak) I dunno prices on these at all but recall they have a collector value. Interesting part is he does say OBO in the description.

Austin - Sun Sparcstation - Sparc Classic "Lunchbox" - $20 (East Central) **this one has been listed for quite a while and will expire soon. Also says he has some other Sun equipment as well if interested. This isn't a bad little starter box for slightly older Solaris or Sparc learning. He says it's 50Mhz which is pretty good for these lunchbox systems.

Belton,TX - Texas Instruments Games - $40 (Belton) Actually a really good deal that I'm even tempted about. System, power adapter, video cable and quite a few games.

..interesting first post ;-) Welcome to the forums? Not a steal but not a bad price for the pair. Looks like an interesting box of disks with them to hopefully get one or both booted.

Thanks. I've emailed the seller, but he hasn't responded. I'm just starting out as a collector (regretting all the stuff I've thrown away over the years), so I expect I'll be doing a lot of lurking and learning for a while...

Franklin Ace 1200 (Apple clone) with original monitor near Pittsburgh. It looks as if it's in good condition. Seller isn't giving it away (ask is $100), but he says he'll take best offer. I don't know how much these usually go for outside of eBay, or if they're pretty common, but figured I'd post it just in case...

Hey Peter, what are you using to run your queries on Craigslist? I mean, are you using one of the web sites that do it, or do you have your own code?
