anyone know if the 5.25" diskettes that come with IBM dos 3.30 are double density or high density? I want to know if they'd be compatible with my standard XT 5.25" full height floppy drive.

Not absolutely sure but given the date released I'm picking they would have been double density.

I'd have to agree, these are likely 360K floppies. DOS 3.3 didn't support 1.44MB 3.5" floppies, and was the first build (iirc) to support the 720K ones. Logic would dictate that if 1.2MB HD 5.25" was available at the time, they wouldn't be worrying about 3.5" 720K disks, so it is likely a 360K. (If my logic makes any sense).

Either way, you can't hurt them by trying to read them, so give it a shot. Just be sure not to write to them or format them, heh, until you know that they're the right type.

Yes they are.

Yes they are.

DOS 3.3 should come on either 1 720k 3.5" or 2 360k 5.25". The 720k should have Boot-Install/Operations while the 360k's are Boot-Install and Operations.

lyonadmiral is correct.

I am looking at a DOS 3.30 Reference book in its original binder First Edition April 1987. It contains two 5.25" 360K diskettes and one 3.5" 720K.
360K #1 Startup P/N 80X0735
360K #2 Operating P/N 80X0929
720K Startup/operating P/N 80X0939

In Chap 1 Introduction it states it is compatible with everything from 5.25" 160KB/180KB single-sided , 320KB/360KB double-sided, 1.2MB high-capacity to 3.5" double-sided 720KB and double-sided 1.44 MB.

Best regards,
Dave

I also have one of these binders in original condition, same disks as described above.

I don't recall seeing HD 5.25 disks until MS version 6.0 but perhaps 5.0 had them.

I got DOS 5.0 on 720Kb disks, so I think they didn't start shipping HD disks before version 6.
