I have several IDE drives that dont work, mostly hard disks but also ZIP drives
What I would like to know is if there is some IDE diagnostic tools available to help diagnostic the state of the drive by communicating with it through the IDE bus
I mean at least the software can report ... the drive "Ready signal" is not on
I am not an expert on how the IDE bus works but for sure there are commands the PC can send to the drives to question their current status
This is because when you start the PC the fact that the drive was not "recognized" by the BIOS is very little information ...
Did the drive send any data ? the data was not understood by the PC ?
Normal consumer IDE diagnostic software is very basic and cannot address this issues
I would think that maybe every device brand must have their specific tools and a solution that "fits all" must be impossible but even so at least some basic IDE hardware troubleshoot
I have looked online north and south but have not been able to find anything
