OEMs & clones on eBay (continuous listings)

Just how many 386 machines have PCI and heat sinks on the CPU. Also the condition of that poor machine.

I failed my detective test. I didn't even think to click the arrows to the right. Well, it looks like it started out as a 386 anyway. I consider myself ostracized for the day.

I remember a gateway 2000 desktop with a riser card in the mid 90's that had a pci slot. I am pretty sure it was a 386.. Could have been 486, if so it was an early one.

Gateway 2000 did briefly sell 486 systems with PCI slots...these were branded as the "P4D" series. Near as I can remember, though, 386s had been deleted from their product list before these appeared.

I bought a Compaq Deskpro 486/66 a decade ago specifically because it was one of the only 486s with PCI slots and I wanted to see how much faster PCI video cards were in it compared to ISA cards. Compatibility was very low; I went through 4 PCI video cards before I found one that worked in that slot, and the performance was underwhelming. A failed experiment.

That 8088 Dell seems to be in a bit of an identity crisis: "PC's Limited" on the front, "Dell" on the back. It's from 1988, so this would have been during the company's transitional period.

A fine system, in any case! One thoughtful improvement Dell made over the IBM XT design was making the case a couple inches deeper, both opening up wiggle room between the drives and power supply and preventing the speaker from interfering with long cards.
