SEGA Game Gear VA1 Schematic - HELP!

Yup. At least on VA1 models. Not sure about the later VA4. Certainly makes the idea of an IPS mod a bit scary doesn't it!

Won't be doing it to this one, the people I'm doing the job for just want it working again is all, but yeah, videos are pretty much how I've learned all this stuff. I was looking at a text tutorial yesterday about it just because I was curious and it doesn't look that bad - certainly wouldn't give my first go at it on someone else's game gear though. Maybe I should get one for myself at some point, dead ones are only around $30-40 on eBay...

I have the one I took pics of, I be willing to part with. Fully works, has the battery covers and the multiplayer link cover still on it... Def needs a recap.

not currently buying stuff off forum members for personal privacy reasons but I appreciate the offer!
If you happen to be planning on going to the VCF East swap meet in June though I could be interested! It is a bit far for you though..

I'll grab you some photos this evening... About to eat dinner. Its the unit I used the microscope on for D4.

From research it seems the 5v rail may be shorted to ground. Will have to confirm this later.

Here are pictures of the unit, will get the screws in and show it working... Has a little sticker residue and could use a detailing but its a solid unit. Did have some battery damage when I got it, but I was able to repair it from the parts unit (just battery contacts). Inside is super clean except around a few caps that will need to be addressed.

Forgot to add sound works but really low volume, suggesting caps have mostly failed. Par for the course on these. Nothing a recap cant fix. Screen is vibrant (will be even brighter after recap) and no dead lines.

Can you tell what could be wrong with mine right now? What’s worrisome is that now the backlight isn’t coming on anymore. Worried something burnt out somehow on the power board… the power light still flashes for a second. I’m worried I cycled it too many times like this. I corrected two bad solder joints but it still isn’t working. Also checked and nothing looks burnt on the power board (or shorted) but I’m detecting a bit of a bad smell maybe? Ugh.

I mean it looks totally fine to me? Would be more worried about the resistor that got stuck to my iron but i just tested it isn’t shorted
Mainly worried now about the backlight no longer coming on. That suggests the high voltage rail that was just working just went dead…
The high pitched noise is also gone now :(

Already did that… they’re all fine. Really worried I fried it when I power cycled it quickly a few minutes ago. The backlight stayed on and it didn’t cut out like it normally did and then I shut it off, was just trying to see if it behaved differently but maybe that tripped up the protection mode and it didn’t actuate… worried about that because why else would it suddenly get worse? More frustrating is that nothing is visibly burnt. Other side of the main board looks good too.

Also checked a bunch of components near that diode to see if anything was shorted and nothing is. CCFL tube isn’t shorted either.
