Could you share a few more pictures of the 5153 display - maybe some that show it in operation? If it is in good condition and works well I can offer $100 including shipping.

Madison, Wisconsin 53718 for local pickup. First time here, my bad for ignorance

I appreciate the offer however, I do not think I’d take less than $200-150 plus shipping.

I'd be super interested in both the Portable (5140) and the IBM Color display (5153). Let me know where you are so I can figure out if a local pickup is possible! :)

First off, welcome to the forums, it's good to have you here.

Now down to some business. Can you please post the amount(s) you are looking to sell these things for and if they are open to negotiation. This will go a long way to garnering the right type of interest in your items, avoid low ballers frustrating you, but also avoid others getting frustrated when turn them down because it's below the amount you have in your head.

If you want top dollar for your items, you need to put in the effort.

If you want to be lazy and show a half opened box where it can barely be seen, giving no information about the monitor and not at all bother restoring it, and expecting us to read your mind about what you want, don't expect ridiculous offers.

Vintage computer gear is long past the point of being able to find NoS and plugging it in and it just works. They age like anything else, and powering on something like an old monitor without properly vetting it, can lead to destruction of the monitor, or at the very least, expensive repair after fireworks and magic smoke blow out of it. Computers are the same story, that is the age of battery bombs and capacitor leakage. Nobody is going to pay top dollar for a machine that will potentially cost hundreds of dollars to repair and get working again.

If you want a dumping ground for auctioning your untested gear while providing no descriptions or proper pictures of said items, Ebay is probably a better place.

I understand your concern. My issue for not opening them is due to the fact that they are vintage. I do not want to mess anything up as things get delicate the older they get. Also for pricing, I did indicate in my initial post I don’t know what anything is worth and I’m looking for offers right now. Thank you though!

FYI the plastic on those 5153 monitors becomes very brittle over time. So it will probably crack if you ship the monitor without a lot of protection, especially in the winter.

But you have an idea of what you want to get for them, otherwise you'd have taken the offer of $100 for the 5153, instead you countered with a different amount. You have to understand that the whole "I don't know what this is worth" trope is something that come up on here time and time again, and when it comes down to it, most people who do this do in fact have an amount in mind and just worried it's too low so they want to leave it open ended, which ends in everyone getting frustrated and pissed off. No one wins in these situations, and to be honest, from a potential buyer's perspective, this feels kind of shady, and does not inspire confidence that you are seeking reasonable sales prices.

Why not just post the upper end of what you are hoping to get for these things, then negotiate down from there?

Side note: Let's keep this thread on track, about the sale. I am going to delete some posts in here that are not relevant and might be construed as negative or "attacking" the OP.

If the monitor case shatters in your hands when you try and remove it from the box, it's better than it shattering in shipping and potentially necking the tube. You also need to check for plastic burn, old cord plastic tends to offgas and melt plastic around it. If it was wrapped around the monitor, then you're likely going to have a melted cord into the plastic.

The 286 case is solid steel, in no way is it delicate. The rust on the screws is a bad foreboding that something not good is going on inside the case.
