And just to heighten it. Why did Hunter Thompson supposedly also do it ?

There are conspiracy theorists who question Hunters death based on the recorded telephone conversations during the "suicide"

Every now and then, someone thought missing and declared dead shows up, perfectly alive. Recently, a 23 year old guy in Sweden was thought to have drowned more than two years ago. He was sought after internationally, but never found.

During the time, he travelled passport-less through Europe, and made money from small jobs here and there. He didn't want to withdraw money from his bank account, as it would raise suspicions. Last spring he contacted his family and went back home by midsummer, but apparently no-one bothered to contact the police. Not until a traffic police stopped him on Tuesday after the Christmas weekend due to poor lights on his car, they could identify the missing and thought drowned person as alive.

There's a Simon & Garfunkel song about a man (by the name of Richard Corey) who has just about everything & in the end Commits Suicide. If I correctly recall: "everyone's mind was filled with wonder - when the evening headlines read..."
