Does anyone else find this disturbing?

I always loved the way MIcrosoft would move or change a few menus in each new release. Device Manager was always a pain to find.

I just learned some of the cli/run method for opening some of them. Devmgmt.msc for device manager, diskmgmt.msc for disk management, ncpa.cpl for the network settings, control for the classic control panel, compmgmt.msc for computer manangement, and sysdm.cpl for system properties.

Shouldn't have to do that. Why move something important like that?

To sell training classes. That is exactly what happened with Office 2007.

These fancy "UI designers" are all from the marketing department these days and have no understanding that a GUI is basically a language.

Oh, hey, lets get rid of English and all of those other pesky languages and standardize on Esperanto. At the rate Microsoft and others are going, they would.

But Device Manager is not something the normal user would be using. This is for the person maintaining the PC. So why move it then? It's not like it's a package
that they sell over and over (Office 2003, Office 2005, Office 2008, Office 2012, ...). If they want to annoy the maintainers this is sure a good way to go about it.

Oh that bloody ribbon was crap but its even worse now.

Useful commands like print that used to be one click now takes three

Call me crazy but I just refuse. I will use libre office or open office instead. I used it for so long and it worked and I was good at it.. then they changed the interface and it was as if I had never used it before... Itslike Grandcheapskate said on post 103.. Im not going to waste time and brain effort relearning something I already know.

Another example: My wifes company is switching from outlook to office 365. They are imposing lots of new restriction like emails need to be purged every year, etc.. Crazy stuff. I dont like office 365. And I cant understand the current trends in IT NEEDED TO ONLY USE MICROSOFT. There are OTHER email servers out there which behave and act almost identical to outlook.. Why stay with a platform that makes your bussiness change to thier whim?

Its really stupid today for corporate models to continue to push windows and office 365 onto people when there are better alternatives.

Its a lot to do with 'security'

Our company is a Very High Risk target and the IT is under constant attack so they like a uniform and single source supported system which I suppose is understandable when your spread at different sites across the country.

But I think they hate the users.

Fortunately, I can get away with that on here because Daver2 isn't in the desktop network IT bit, but specialises in the plant computers :)

Sure, but WINDOWS itself is whats under attack. Run linux

I spent 20 years in IT and administration. There are extremely safe and secure alternatives to running windows or microsoft products. There has been for a while.

The argument of learning curve to users usually comes up.. Look at the 70's, 80's. and 90's prior to windows being the dominant usage. There were MANY proprietary systems people had to learn. People are not stupid unless you treat them as such. Give them REAL training (which does not seem to exist anymore) and they will get it..

In the healtcare environment I was apart of huge projects of consolodating multiple hospitals and clinics under new equipment, vendors, and systems.. Im not talking about running a new Application. I am talking about the ability to treat patients in general [billing, scheduling, dictation, rounds, treatment, simulations-- All completely different now under new vendors and applications] They alotted 1 to 2 weeks training onsite for staff. And you know what? It worked out regardless of everyones fears.

True, our Honeywells will not get attacked because no bugger knows GCOS 2.1 :)

Dont get me started on Honeywell systems. and the 6 people who support them whom cant be bothered to ever get back to you. And if they do,, not solve a problem.

If I was a member of an alien race and wanted to make the people of Earth a slave race, I would get them reliant on technology and wait until there are very few who understand how to do the task without the use of technology (let's say using a road map instead of GPS). Then pull the technology away and watch the silly humans walk around like zombies.

I do have sympathy for those who cannot understand new technology. I tried to help a friend whose laptop is running Windows 10 and I could not figure out how to do even the most menial task. And as I use to say during my working days in IT, I simply have no desire to spend my time learning a new way to do the same thing.

Long pig.....🥘
Way of subject!
For those not familiar with old black/white Twilight Zone, The aliens come with thing to improve our ability to produce food and medicines to cure all human aliments.
They regularly hall a number of people of to their planets to "give them the benefits of the the alien technology".
On earth they try to decode one of the aliens books, with a shocking result.

The Mac version of Office still has the traditional File / Edit / etc. menu bar, because Apple requires it.
