What are your favorite games that run on the venerable MS-DOS platform? I consider anything that runs on a 486SX to be a 'true' DOS game. E.G. Action Supercross is too modern and Quake is borderline.

Mine are:
Flight Simulator 4.0b
SkyRoads
PacPC II
The Hitchikers Guide to the Galazy <- I have an original boxed copy
Street Rod 2 <- I have an original boxed copy
:)

Monster Bash series
Commander Keen series
Biomenace series
Stargunner
(anything else by Apogee, really)
Overkill
Sid Meier's Pirates
Master of Orion I and II
Cannon Fodder
Beast
Dune 2
Wolfenstein 3D
Doom 1 and 2
So many, I'd have to boot up my T6600C and read through the directory listing to get you a proper list. :D

Just about anything from Lucas Arts such as Full Throttle, The Dig, Monkey Island Series. There are the Sierra games such as Quest for Glory, Space Quest etc. Also the 2 Discworld games are awesome. Rise of the Triad, Doom, Duke Nukem. The Commander Keen Series was good too.

Can't think of any other atm.

Day of the Tentacle
Full Throttle
Indycar Racing / Nascar Racing
Flight Simulator 5.1
Chuck Yeager's Air Combat
Wolf3D / Spear of Destiny
The Need for Speed
Flight Unlimited
Duke Nukem 3D
Jetfighter II
SimCity 2000
X-Wing / TIE Fighter
Alone in the Dark
F-19 Stealth Fighter / F-117A Stealth Fighter 2.0
Lemmings
Out of this World
Star Trek: 25th Anniversary
Dark Forces
Stunts

...I could go on for a few pages. I've got dozens of original boxed DOS games (back when you actually got a nice big box and manual for your $50).

I wonder if we're poised for another "video game crash" like the one back in 1983? Graphics have always been a major driver of game sales, and now that the newest consoles & titles have pushed the limits of photorealism, game companies will have to work a lot harder to give buyers compelling reasons to purchase their newest titles. Actually, I'm getting bored of the whole photorealistic 3D paradigm, and would love to see a return to some good old-fashioned 2D adventure titles.

New day, new mind, new list:

Raptor - Call of the Shadows
Tyrian
Return to Discworld
The Dig
Day of the Tentacle (must admit, haven't played this since I was like 4 when I played through with my mom, lol)
Castlevania
Space Quest
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Warcraft - Orcs and Humans
Warcraft II - Tides of Darkness/Beyond the Dark Portal
Duke Nukem 3D

I'll keep posting more if I keep thinking of them - I need this list for myself too, lol.

I have to agree:
Lucas
Sierra
Infocom

Doom
Flight Sim (I like both 4.0 and 5.1)

But don't forget the golden oldies:
Round 42
Alley Cat
Moon Patrol
Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer

The "Golden Oldies" are prior to my time - granted I play Pacmac and Asteroids, but I was exposed to them through their propagation through various formats and such over the years. I was born 1990 though, so my nostalgia period is mostly 1991-1998 or so..

I loved the gold box SSI/TSR games and Ultima series although I first played Ultima on a b&w zenith (386 or 486) laptop
Terminal Velocity was awesome though that really needed a 486DX 100 or Pentium for the best game play.

Just thinking of some others that aren't yet mentioned but were fun:
Loom
Longbow (Robin Hood)
Dark Ages (on my older systems)
Jill of the Jungle (similar but newer graphics and smoother game play)
Duke Nukem 1/2
Civilization (DOS.. this is a must have but don't play unless you have 8 hours of free time heh)
Red Baron

8086 games:
Sopwith
Janitor Joe
Castle Adventure (don't kiss the vampire)
Hm.. oh well can't always list em all ;-)

Is it time to break out the "young whippersnappers!" line?

:p

Dang. you're nostalgic for the computers I used in college... (Then again, there are others here who were nostalgic for computers THEY used in college - before I was born...)

Yeah I must add Duke Nukem 2 and Jill of the Jungle to mine too.

*looks on his shelf*

Dare to Dream 1-3 (technically these are win3x games, but I always think of them when I think up my DOS game lists)
Zool 2
Lemmings
The Incredible Machine
Billy the Kid Returns!
Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
Gobliins 2
Skunny (all of them)
The Legend of Robin Hood
Creepers (kinda like Lemmings)
Dungeon Keeper (late DOS game - 1995 or 1996..)
Corridor 7
Halloween Harry (also known as Alien Carnage outside USA I believe)
Electroman (also known as Electro Body in some places)
Scuba Venture
Arachnophobia
In Search of Dr. Riptide (wasn't on shelf, Scuba made me think of it though)

Again, I will return with more when I think of them.

Maybe I'll take a picture of that shelf some time and post it..

Edit: JAZZ JACKRABBIT!!! :O

Really late edit, like two days later: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (that version by Ultra that was ported everywhere, even PC :D)

The ones with stars next to them are my ultimate favorites, but these are all games that I enjoyed immensely. In no particular order:

Star Control II*
Police Quest
Space Quest
Syndicate
Monkey Island 2
Day of the Tentacle*
X-Wing*
Epic Pinball*
Wolfenstein 3D*
Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold
Sim City*
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Leisure Suit Larry
Gold Rush
Scorched Earth*

I'm sure that there are more, but that's a pretty good list.

Chris

EDIT:

Red Baron
The Incredible Machine

classic Apogee/Epic shareware games: Keen, Cosmo, Crystal Caves, Secret Agent, Duke Nukem 1/2, Jill of the Jungle, Epic Pinball / Silverball, Kroz, ZZT, One Must Fall: 2097, Major Stryker, Raptor, Blake Stone, Skunny Kart, many more... love those shareware gems :)

Prince of Persia 1/2 - the graphics were SOOO smooth on that, amazed me back in the day

many Sierra games, but especially Conquests of the Longbow, Space Quest entire series, Thexder, and King's Quest series.

The Last Half of Darkness shareware game - I remember my buddy and I starting the game at roughly 8pm and staying up til 5am to finish it one summer night. Never did get the last episodes of that game....

I would have to say Star Control 2, the Test Drive series (1-3) and the Sierra Quest games are on my list but at the top are Microsoft Adventure, Adventure in Serenia and Jaybird :)

MicroLink Yahtzee
Ultima 5, 6, 7 Parts 1 & 2, and 8
Monkey Island 1 & 2
Sharedata Wheel of Fortune
Majohngg 4.6
NYET (Tetris)
Duke Nukem 3-D
DOOM
Maniac Mansion 1 & 2
X-Wing
Tie Fighter
Maxit (really GWBASIC but I have seen it compiled for DOS before)
Car & Driver
Test Drive III
Wacky Wheels
Wolfenstein 3D
Leisure Suit Larry 1-3
Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist
Sim City
Sim Earth

Ultima and Monkey Island are my favorite Franchises. I like U7 in DOS a lot, but I like it more in Exult where I can cheat and cause hilarity to ensue. Love Kikoskia's playthroughs of that.

Honorable Mentions
Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer - I love crashing in this flight sim just to hear what hilarous tidbit Chuck Yeager has to say: "Do I Know You?", "What a waste of a perfectly good aircraft!", are the only two I remember but Ir remember laughing my arse off at Cy's comments.

The Ford Simulator IV: A game that revolves around driving Ford cars, I have been on many a wild and crazy pursuit while outrunning the trooper in a 93' Ford Escort with a 1.6L 4 cylinder and automatic trans. Also the cheesiest NPC car's I've ever seen. Should have put Bigfoot (the truck, not the sasquatch) in the game.

Yeah I used to use a TSR cheat program with U7 for similar tasks.. seemed to have the same concepts, I could add a character to my team, change their stats (that's how I know Lord British is probably impossible to beat under normal circumstances), create objects (this needed some guidance as I ended up with some fairly useless clutter in my inventory while toying around.. anyone need a horse head? how about a wall?).

Never heard of Exult. Have to check that out. That brought me to this interesting site though http://www.projectbritannia.com/ which I'm just now reading but it sounds like some folks are remaking the games with newer graphics (or scripting it into the Dungeon Siege engine?) I can't quite tell but it looks interesting although I really liked the game because of it's mixture of typing and graphics (U6). Although I'd probably just get side tracked cheating again and trying to use the gargoyle runes myself.

I wasn't really into games but DOOM hooked me for a while. I was certainly blown away when I first saw it.

Tez

Just remembered another few:

- Command and Conquer
- Command and Conquer: Red Alert

I admit that I played these on 9x back in the day, but they did have DOS versions.
